Welcome!
You’re here because you’re (most likely) a writer interested in learning more about the writing process and/or the (very) nuanced craft of creative writing.
It doesn’t matter if you’re new to creative writing or if you’re a seasoned writer; there’s always something to learn about craft. Maybe I’m a slow learner (ha!), but it was only after completing my MFA in creative writing—a program I entered after I’d already been writing for twenty years—that I realized how truly complex the craft of writing is and how much there is to learn—and how exciting it all is! This revelation is what keeps me writing; it’s what keeps me learning, analyzing, and participating in workshops and craft discussions. There are no limits!
Why JEK Writes? Why Now?
I’m launching JEK Writes as a companion to my editing business and as a space to focus more specifically on creative writing (as opposed to academic or technical writing/editing, which I also do). Content will include information on the art and craft of creative writing as well as personal insight regarding the writing, editing, and submission processes, based on what I have learned (and continue to learn) formally, informally, and through my own writing and editing experiences.
You Don’t Have to Write Alone
Writing is often a solitary act, and writers tend to spend a lot of time in their heads, allowing seeds of doubt and frustration to grow. The writing process can be daunting, even for seasoned writers. It’s long. It’s hard. It’s time-consuming. Thus, it can be helpful (and maybe even essential) to have a community that you can learn from and connect with.
By subscribing to my (free) newsletter, you are helping to build community. Content will include things like craft articles, writing prompts, and reading recommendations (including the Substacks of writers I look up to), among other things.
And if you also have a Substack, let’s connect!
