Jessica, this is great. You showing up for your writing is paying off, and is, as always, and inspiration. Behind the tab that's open as I type this is an open Word document that I've been working on, and reading your piece has me paw at the ground to plunge back in. I'm proud of you, and and can't wait to get this anthology. I've always enjoyed your writing -- your stories are consistently wonderful. Looking forward to seeing more of the interesting, surprising worlds each one conjures!
I like making time for different parts of the writing process in the daily showing up. I've also found that sometimes when I'm really stuck, showing up with a non-writing creative project helps.
You always encourage and inspire me, Jessica. As I am now working part-time, I have less time to write, and I am missing the practice. Writing gives me a way to organize my thoughts and spirit. Your determination and persistence are good reminders for me.
Love this reminder that showing up for the process of writing is showing up for myself. Everything shifts when we unfasten from productivity as the end goal, so very true! Also, congrats again on being named one of the Best in Microfiction for this year. I've gotta say, I really dig the premise of throwing a party to celebrate opting out of life in a culture that prioritizes marquee signs!
Congratulations Jessica!!! What a feather in your cap. I've always hoped to make it into one of those 'Best of' anthologies. I've had a couple of journals recommend a story of mine, but as Bridget's father just said [in writing at my house] 'all that work and no cigar.'
Since I'm going on vacation in a week, I have an excuse not to write. There's a lot of stuff I need to do to get ready.... And I didn't write yesterday and felt bad about it, just like your piece suggests. [I did manage to get our AC fixed which was an accomplishment but it didn't make up for not writing.] I'm back today and feeling so much better about life, my work, everything. Just like you say it will.
Your post is brilliant!!! I'm thinking of various bumper stickers /tee shirts that could come out of it. 'Process is Progress' maybe being my favorite. And it helps all of us who write to keep everything in perspective....and to keep on with our writing.
Thank you so much for writing that and CONGRATLATIONS again!!!
I love your writing -- all of it! Thank you for reminding me to show up! BTW, I have a weird relationship with the chair at my desk. When I am not at it, I think: "Ugh why would I want to sit there?? So uncomfortable! Noooo" or something like that. Then when I actually sit at my desk, I find myself getting engulfed in my work! Whhyyyyy are our brains like this??

Yes, I love the idea of mixing it up with other creative projects!
All well said here, Jessica--especially how "society lusts after a product" (recalling from memory, might not be an exact quote 😅). So very true!
Thanks!!

Thank you, Karen!
