Latest Rejection
I received my third rejection for July yesterday, bringing me to 55 rejections for 2025 so far. I’m well on track to hit at least 100 rejections for the year (what “folk wisdom” says every writer should strive for). You can read more about my thoughts about rejection (and why it should be celebrated) here.
Latest Publication
I’m thrilled to be published once again in Ghost Parachute; you can find my story “Put a Hat on or You’ll Catch Your Death” in the July issue.
Latest YouTube
As I shared in my previous Substack post, I’ve recently started a YouTube channel, where I share writing tips and related information. I currently have three videos up, the latest one being “Are You Serious? Writing Is Never Finished??”
I hope you’ll subscribe, like, and comment!
Latest Tip and Latest Prompt
I’m also delighted to have a flash fiction writing tip featured on Vancouver Flash Fiction’s Facebook page (and duplicated here):

And speaking of leaning into weirdness and absurdity, I was chuffed to have been invited to contribute a prompt to Kathy Fish’s Flash Extravaganza; the prompt I contributed encourages writers to dig into absurdity, to do exactly what I suggest above: displace the reader, catch them off guard.
As always, if you enjoyed this post, I encourage you to support me by becoming a JEK Writes paid subscriber or simply buying me a coffee. Thank you!
Any post that uses the word "chuffed" is good in my book! I love your YT videos! I suggest you consider adding a "cover" which isn't hard to design in Canva. Feel free to ask me about it!
You definitely displaced this reader with "Put on a Hat..."!!! Congratulations, on all the things!
